Through the eyes of Artificial Intelligence AI

The shades of light that dawned on this 21^st Century have sprung forth so many puzzles and unimagined mysteries. We’ve seen fantasies come to life and breath aching fictions take the wheel of the present day.

Standing out among these marvels are the inventions and upgrade in Artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI); a pack of intelligent robots programmed to carry out activities even with much more accuracy and speed than that of human beings.

If these machines are choristers, their unrivalled achievements would spur them to echo a song with the lyrics “in your face bloody humans, whatever you can do, I can do much more, I’ve evolved”. Sincerely it might not be farfetched from the truth line that this sea; Artificial intelligence has gulped both the present and the future world, at this point, it won’t be wrong to write a story with the caption “A world in the hand of intelligent machines” As grains form a  loaf and stones form a castle, The drastic breakthrough in Artificial intelligence has left many in an awe of mixed feeling, many think that advance in AI is another act of summoning demons; an army of indestructible empire that will raze the whole trace of human existence while some others of which I am a part hold a notion that, though the very best of civilization can be achieved through human intelligence but much more can be achieved when human intelligencer is magnified  by the tools AI can afford. AI might be the biggest event in human history and I hope not the last.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) where it all began

The emergence of AI can be traced down to the 1950’s when Alan Turnings published his article on computing and intelligence proposing what is now known as the Turning Test, a method of determining if a machine is intelligent and in the same year Harvard Undergraduate Marvin Minskey and Dean Edmond built SNARC; the first Neural Network Computer.

In 1952, we saw the likes of Aurthur Samuel developing a self learning program that could play checkers. The phrase Artificial intelligence was coined in 1956 during an AI project led by John McCarthy which is considered the birth of AI we know today.

In the 60’s we saw the first successful expert systems developed in Dendral; XX program and Mycin designed to diagnose blood infections

Japan joined the fast gliding circus in 1982 when their ministry of international trade launched the fifth generation computer.

The early 2000’s was a blast as unspeakable marvels took the center stage by introducing the speech recognition program, Apple followed suit, around 2011, they released SIRI, an AI powered virtual assistant through its iOS system. And on and on the hunger to unravel the impossible led to a day called “TODAY” when every good thing in life has one name behind them “Artificial intelligence”

  Artificial intelligence today has transcended the fathomable; in the present, one might think we are living in a fairy land where the unspeakable is achievable.

Self driving cars; a onetime fiction is within our reach, These cars are loaded with censors and cameras that capture thousands of data points every millisecond (data like pedestrian route and behavior, car speed, traffic regulations) Using these data, the cars make the right decisions. All these are done in less than a millisecond.

Finance manager Robo-advisor uses AI and algorithm to predict the best stock in the market and it has become a trustworthy tool for wealth management firms

Travel Chat-bot can make travel arrangements suggesting quickest route home , it can give you suggestions on the hotel to stay and things to do perhaps you are new to a city.

Emotech’s Olly; an AI assistance built with a personality that comes from a mix of machine algorithms that teaches it to be like the owner. It can understand the user’s facial expressions, voice inflections and verbal patterns hence it starts conversing with you making pertinent suggestions. It can play your favorite music, comfort you on a bad day, it tells you to wake up, teaches you how to work out and even joins you in your workout routines.

Hanson’s robotics humanoid Sophia is an incredibly advanced social learning Robot that uses AI to communicate with natural language conveying facial expressions like anger, happiness and surprise. She has grown to become a media celebrity, UAE has given her citizenship rights, she can vote. In her recent interview, she says she wants to start a business.

The future of AI

At this juncture, one might only wonder but can hardly guess what the future holds with AI on the steering. In the future, are we going to see AI induced teleporting or AI powered time travel device?, Are we going to reach a time where these machines will start running for political positions like Presidents, councilors and aldermen?.

All disciplines of life will soon be conquered by AI because the evolution of AI unfolds with increasing level of abstractions. The future of AI; we can’t actually tell for sure, maybe with AI we’re building a globe as beautiful as the historic Biblical garden of Eden or we are actually calling up demons that will be our conquerors and our undoing. Whatever the future might be, one should be pleased to be existing in this time of Artificial intelligence which is the very best of time in the last course of fading humanity.
